This month we will review Rule 8: Playing the course as it is found.
Purpose of Rule:
Rule 8 covers a central principle of the game: “play the course as you find it.” When the player’s ball comes to rest, they normally have to accept the conditions affecting the stroke and not improve them before playing the ball. However, a player may take certain reasonable actions even if they improve those conditions, and there are limited circumstances where conditions may be restored without penalty after they have been improved or worsened.

Flighting the golf ball:
Different shots and different weather conditions call for different ball flights. Primarily a lower flight. The way to achieve this is by taking 1 more club than what the shot calls for. Next, we want to choke down slightly on the shaft. This affects distance and flight by making the club shorter. We then want to move the ball back in our stance closer toward the middle or a half a ball behind center. This will flight the ball down and help keep the ball under the wind. Give it a shot next time you are out practicing and let me know how you do!
