Four Ways to Get Your Family Involved with the Game this Spring and Summer
One silver lining amid our current situation has been the amount of quality family time we’ve all enjoyed over the past month. On the flip side, so much of that time has been spent either at – or in proximity to – home due to state-issued executive orders and social distancing guidelines.
Golf courses in South Carolina have been allowed to stay open throughout the crisis, serving as a much-needed escape by providing open spaces, outdoor enjoyment and spirit-lifting camaraderie.
Cherokee Valley has hosted both familiar and new faces during this period, including an upswing in the number of families and junior golfers.
Kids who would normally be in school and participating in various scholastic and travel sports leagues have tagged along with their parents or grandparents for a round of golf.
For some, it has been their first exposure to the game. For others who haven’t had the time to play due to myriad of other commitments, it has been a welcomed reunion with a sport they once loved.
And it’s not just the kids; many parents and grandparents are enjoying golf for the first time or getting pleasantly reacquainted.
As we round into the spring and early summer and the outdoors beckon, here are four ways to enjoy family golf at Cherokee Valley.
1.
Safety First
The most important consideration right now, and in the foreseeable future, is safety.
Cherokee Valley puts families at ease by strictly following the National Golf Course Owners Association’s “Park-and-Play” guidelines to provide a safe and sanitary environment for all golfers.
Families can
book and pay online, or at the check-in at tables located on the Event Center deck with a team member who is over six-feet away.
They can then load their own clubs on a completely sanitized golf cart (family members can share) or
exciting Finn Cycle
(with valid driver’s licenses) and be on their way. Need to burn some pent-up energy and calories? Try walking with a push cart or carrying your clubs.
But be advised: The layout is hilly, especially the final six holes, and occasionally requires long treks between holes.
Flagsticks are required to stay in the hole (foam rings keep balls near the top of the cup for easy extraction), rakes have been removed from bunkers and golfers can smooth the sand with their feet.
Not only is this safer, it helps speed up the game for the entire family
2. Junior Training Tees
Golf is inherently challenging and even playing from the forward tees can be exceedingly difficult for junior golfers who haven’t developed the skills or swing speed to advance the ball more than 100 yards.
To help build skills and confidence, Cherokee Valley has installed “Training Tees” placed ahead of the Green Tees allowing junior golfers to play at a manageable and fun 2,783 yards.
The Training Tees are demarcated by large round disks embedded in the fairways. As they can be a bit challenging to find, owner Matt Jennings and his team are in the process of painting arrows on the cart paths to help families locate them.
Once a young golfer is enjoying the game and building confidence, he or she can consider moving to the 4,308 Green Tees.
3. Summer Camps and Clinics
Much uncertainty surrounds summer camps this year as to how they’ll fit into state and local government plans for reopening the economy. Here is a look at what’s currently scheduled at Cherokee Valley this spring and summer.
First Tee, June 11 – Aug. 6 (no classes July 2nd)
The First Tee uses golf to teach youth life lessons and leadership skills by emphasizing nine core values through seamless golf instruction: honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment. Cherokee Valley offers the LITTLE LINKSTERS, PLAYer, PAR, and BIRDIE classes.
FCA Camp, July 26-29
FCA Day Camp is a wonderful opportunity for kids ages 11-18 to learn golf skills, golf etiquette, and the principles of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in a fun-filled, no-pressure and safe environment for all levels of golfers. PGA Junior League (scheduled to start in June)
PGA Junior League is a fun, social and inclusive opportunity for boys and girls ages 13 and under to learn and enjoy the game of golf from PGA and LPGA Professionals. Like many other recreational youth sports, participants wear numbered jerseys and play on teams with friends. It utilizes a popular scramble format for less pressure and even more enjoyment.
Junior Play Days, Fridays Kids Play Free with an Adult
To encourage families to play together at Cherokee Valley, kids age 13 and under play free with an adult. Starting May 5th, “Junior Play Days” will be held on Tuesday nights at 6 p.m. A different game is featured, weekly, and the golf shop will pair up players and send them out unattended. To sign-up, call the golf shop at (864) 895-6758 the Monday before.
4. Family Memberships
No two families are alike and situations at home vary drastically during this time. To provide maximum flexibility and options, Cherokee Valley offers four different Family Memberships.
One of the best club values in the state, Platinum Membership
($200 monthly) includes full access to golf, the resort pool, golf training facility and spacious practice range. It also features use of neighboring North Greenville University’s (NGU co-op) fitness center and reduced rates for select sporting and special events.
Gold Membership
($175 monthly) offers seven-day-a-week access to golf, while Silver Membership
($125 monthly) entitles families to unlimited golf on Saturdays and Sundays.
The Sport Adventure Membership
($1,200) includes unlimited use of the training center, two rounds of golf per month (cart fee not included), player development classes, access to the NGU co-op and use of the pool.
